Knowing and loving all characteristics of a Frenchie, any owner will want to protect their pet in every way they can. Just as any other breeds have potentials for developing genetic health problems, the French bulldog too is prone to certain problems. These lovely dogs can be prone to a brachycephalic airway syndrome. This is common among dogs with compressed tissues and facial bones. This obstructs breathing since they have narrowed nasal cavities, laryngeal collapse, elongated soft palate and other related problems. Such structural defects may not be visible, but can be heard when the dog is put through minimal exercise. Thus, they cannot be put through excessive exercise or heat. There are instances when they may even need surgery to improve breathing and airflow.

French Bulldog Potential Health Problems

Frenchies are also prone to spinal malformations and a condition of the spine known as intervertebral disc disease. They are also found to face reproductive problems. Eye problems are also seen such as cataracts. Intestinal malabsorption disease is also common. Now, the problem is that these problems cannot be detected in a small puppy. It is not possible to predict such maladies in the puppy.

Hip dysplasia

Hip Dysplasia is another heritable condition faced by the Frenchie. This is where the femur does not fit into the pelvic socket of the joint of the hip. They can exhibit lameness or exhibit pain on either rear legs. With an ageing dog, arthritis can develop.

Allergies

Allergies are also another problem of frenchies. Food-based, contact, and inhalant allergies are the main types of allergies. It should be noted that inhalant allergies are accompanied ear infections. It causes eczema on its body.

Hemi vertebrae

Hemi vertebrae is a malformation of the vertebrae causing it to be shaped like a triangle or wedge. Because of this it applies pressure onto the spinal cord. This leads to paralysis, weakness or pain. Von Willebrand’s Disease is a blood disorder, found in both dogs and humans. This is a clotting disease which affects bleeding gums, nosebleeds, prolonged bleeding from surgery and heat cycles.

Cleft Palate disease

Cleft Palate disease is a slit running unilaterally or bilaterally ranging in sizes from a large slit to small hole. Puppies are either born or developed with cleft palates. Elongated soft palate is when the extension of the mouth roof. This causes obstruction of airways and difficulty in breathing.

Patellar Luxation

Patellar Luxation is a common problem for small dogs and can happen in both bones. The thigh-bone, kneecap and tibia is not lined up properly which can slip in and out. Intervertebral Disc Disease happens when a disc of the spine herniated or ruptures and pushes into the spinal cord. The dog feels pain when the disc ruptures, and can lead to weakness or permanent or temporary paralysis.

Cherry Eye

Cherry eye is an inverted third eyelid. Frenchies have tendencies for eye issues. Juvenile cataracts, corneal ulcers, retinal fold dysplasia, and glaucoma are conditions, which afflict them.

French Bulldogs are quite sensitive to heat. They are adaptable, but they cannot be left outdoors or at home on hot days without air conditioning. They are even sensitive to cold weather. Another common health problem is obesity. If they are not an appropriate weight, their health is severely hindered.

Knowing all these health problems that afflict French Bulldogs, you must now be wondering what is the best way to take care of them. Pet insurance is a must for any dog owner these days, especially for such a rare and precious breed like a Frenchie.

Why To Choose Pet Insurance For French Bulldog?

What pet insurance means is that it pays, in total or partly, for treatment at the veterinarian of the insured injured or ill pet. There are some policies, which can be paid out when the pet is stolen or lost, or when the pet dies. There is an ever-increasing rate of expenses being incurred at the veterinarian, which employs expensive drugs and medical techniques. Moreover, dog owners also have higher conceptions of health care for their pets and their standard of living than ever seen before. Thus, there has arisen a need for pet insurance.

Pet insurance protects the owner against paying exorbitant medical fees or even worse, putting your dog down because you cannot afford surgery. Thus, having a surprise accident or illness hit your dog, can be remedied by having an insurance plan in place. There are many pet health insurances available now offering different deals, and they should be read properly before buying.

179 million pets in the region of North America incur $58.5 billion in spending annually. Veterinary care ranks third highest in expenditure, costing owners around $15.25 billion in a year. Such are the rising costs that there has arisen this need for pet insurance. Lassie, the famed dog, was the first to receive insurance in 1982 and brought the concept of pet insurance to the forefront.

Every owner knows that each year your pets are to be taken to the vet for their annual checkups. Also, every month they should get their tick, flea and heartworm medication. These are to be expected. But, these charges alone add up. Along with this, unexpected things such as finding diseases in your dog can be costly. This is what pet insurance is for.

How Much Costs Pet Insurance For French Bulldog?

Depending on what deductible you choose and place where you live – $40 till $80 monthly. Imagine that high risk health issue like Entropion can cost $1,500 till $6,000. Monthly fee of $40 would not be so bad choice.

Choosing Best French Bulldog Insurance

The thing is there are substantial differences in all these companies. These impact the claims coverage and reimbursements from veterinary visits and costs. It is important to choose a plan for financial protection when it really matters. However, all pet insurances have some basic features in common, they are:

  1. Choose a deductible: per year or per incident
  2. Select a co-pay percentage or reimbursement level
  3. Paying for coverage on monthly basis
  4. Seek treatment at a veterinarian of your choosing which is licensed
  5. The vet is paid first, then the person gets reimbursed for the treatment covered by the insurance company by submitting a claim.

  1. Kolitha Dissanayake says:

Excellent article on French bulldog insurance. Living with a dog at the house is absolutely mind relaxing and fun. However, accidents can happen, and they can hurt our physical appearance & income too. Pet insurance would be a financial burden when your pet gets a little too curious, and you’re left with the enormous vet bill. Frenchie insuarance would be ideal

    • Tom says:

      Thank you!
Same as you, we are French bulldog lovers. Over the past few years pet insurance become very popular. That’s why we have decided to review most popular dog insurance companies in the USA and some of them work in other countries. Having pet insurance is almost vital as having insurance for human. In the end insurance will make you pillow for unexpected costs.

  2. Kevin Bailey says:

Actually I didn’t know that our pets can insured 😀 This looks pretty awsome. Does frenchie insuarance works with other types of dogs too? Well, it should be a french dog for frenchie insuarance, But there should be some options for different types of pets.

  3. Shivanya Karthik says:

Many people think a pet insurance is too expensive, and unreliable. This is a great blog summarizing all about the french bulldog & frenchie insuarance. I should share this link with my friends. Thank you Tom, this is top notch.

  4. Nayomi Ichika says:

If you are a true pet lover, vet bills can quickly add up. Unlike other dogs, french bulldogs get sick quickly. French bulldog insurance would be a great match to ease your monthly vet bills.

  5. Asim Ahmed says:

It may be sad for you to think about the health issues your French bulldog may be more vulnerable to, but arming yourself with the knowledge could help ease any unnecessary suffering later. Remember that cheapest doesn’t mean best and you might miss out on important cover if you simply go for the cheapest option.

  6. Sherri says:

Insurance question. I just adopted my LuLu from the shelter a few weeks ago. She is 3 1/2 years old. I want to get insurance for her but I’m not sure how the preexisting conditions works for a rescue? As far as I know, she has no preexisting conditions. Would the insurance cover something such as IVDD not knowing her background?

    • Hettie says:

I just signed up for insurance and they want me to submit my vet records that show their health as they wont cover preexisting conditions. Or there is a big waiting period. So it would be best to get a vet check up and have the record as soon as possible to show she was in good condition when you contracted the pet insurange.

    • Jennifer Co says:

I would call around and ask your questions directly to the insurance companies. I do know that some companies will require a complete physical and a longer waiting period when adopting older dogs.

  7. Dana says:

I have Trupanion. It’s amazing! I’m not sure what I would’ve done with over $6000.00 of vet bills. Excellent customer service. What I would recommend is going to get a checkup because the insurance will ask. Do not ask the vet anything about medical issues. Keep it as a simple checkup. It could possibly be documented in the chart and you do not want that to be sent to insurance. I signed up with Trupanion at my vet and since I did that, my grace period was very short. As far as I know, Trupanion covers IVDD, that was one of the main reasons I chose them because they covered that and also nares and soft palate. Good luck with your sweet rescue pup!

  8. Rick R. says:

There have been a lot of reporting done on the pet insurance industry lately. I suggest you google for them, read them and decide for yourself. The bottom line is that if your pet has a disastrous accident or illness that they cover (and most won’t) then they “might” be worthwhile. I’ve had dogs all my life. When I first started getting Pet insurance through AKC in 2004, it was actually a good product at a fair price, however by 2012 the industry had changed and I no longer believe that pet insurance is a good investment. I think you’re better off just putting the $100 or so a month in a savings account for when you need it.

  9. Julie Albert says:

I have Pets Best for my English bulldog and just added our French bulldog which we get on Saturday. They have really good rates for unlimited

  10. Maria says:

I use embrace. So far good. They covered BOAS surgery. Only had to use it for that. Reimbursed 90% in about 2 days

    • Kym T says:

Yes ! Been with them for 4 years with no claims up until December 2020. One of my boys got sick and needed emergency surgery for suspected blockage based on barium test.. No blockage found and recovered. Back on food and 2 weeks later sick again. Purina pro Plan Focus had recently changed their formula. His sickness turned into a severe heart arrhythmia and heart failure. Yes we suspect food is cause. Lots of other sick dogs from it yet Purina is not acknowledging the problem. Our boy is doing great. His monthly heart meds are $560 a month. PetsBest has covered everything 90%. Because of them we were able to do everything medically possible to pull our boy through. From Dec to Aug without insurance we would of paid almost $16k out of pocket. Highly recommend PetsBest !

    • Jennifer says:

We use pets best they have been great with things. The first claim was a bit slow to process but now it’s about 3 weeks to get payment.

    • Tracy says:

I do! & with the wellness plan. Had it for 3 years now & since most everything including his allergies are covered in afraid to change. They paid out a lot the 1st year, none the 2nd since I didn’t meet my deductible. And they’re about to pay out big this year I just submitted about 4k for baby’s recent ER & hospital admission. Only thing is don’t like is outside of the wellness plan, they take at least 30 days to pay claims.

  11. Biege says:

I just switched from Nationwide to Pets Best. The coverage is much better but the cost is higher. I was trying to be prepared for the event of something really serious . Nationwide does not have the Cadillac plan they used to offer so the coverage for something crucial is low like $5000. Their wellness plan is good after the deductible paid and they are real quick for reimbursement. My puppy needed the nares and soft pallet survey and Nationwide did not cover any of it. $3200 out of pocket!
